About Margaret

PRESS/REVIEWS
"Rosalinde (the flirty wife) is by far the character with the most stage time and the most challenging and extensive singing. Soprano Margaret Newcomb was outstanding and the strongest singer on stage, both in her solo arias and in the numerous duets, trios and other ensemble pieces. Her acting was on point too, with a snobbish and elegant flair representing Rosalinde as a two-faced yet charming woman one cannot entirely dislike. [Allegri con Fuoco]
"Closing the program was soprano Margaret Newcomb who pleases us every time she performs. She sang selections from Kurt Weill's The Seven Deadly Sins. She succeeded in bringing out the drama of the two Anna's by employing different voices. She did particularly well acting out the seductiveness of "Pride." [Voce di Meche]
"Margaret Newcomb was a marvelous Pamina. Newcomb used her full, warm voice well, whether singing lyrically and delicately or urgently and dramatically according to the needs of the opera's various plot turns." [Jack Quinn, Theaterscene.net]
"The sorceress Alcina has been transformed into an elegant and powerful player who solves all the problems. This is a perfect role for the stunning soprano Margaret Newcomb" [Voce di meche]
"Newcomb enchanted the audience with her sincere portrayal of the young heroine, skillfully navigating the music with her complex, sultry soprano. She mixed the playful youthfulness and seriousness of the role well, her performance of the famous "Ach, ich fühl's" especially beautiful." [OperaRox]
"Pamina, sung by the always excellent and beautiful Margaret Newcomb" [Voce di meche]

American soprano Margaret Newcomb has been hailed "APPEALING" and "A FINE SOPRANO" by the NY Times and "EXCELLENT" by Opera News.

This summer, Margaret will make her role debut as Violetta in La Traviata with the dell’Arte Opera Ensemble in New York City. She was last seen making her Fort Worth Opera debut singing two roles in their Frontiers showcase. She appeared as Ina Soep in Gerald Cohen and Deborah Brevoort's Steal a Pencil for Me, and Diana 3 in Mikael Karlsson and Royce Vavrek's Diana Vreeland. Before that, she sang the title role of Suor Angelica with the Opera Project DSM in Des Moines and the role of Woglinde in Das Rheingold with the Opera Company of Brooklyn. She also appeared as a featured soloist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Sonic Blossom, a performance art piece by Lee Mingwei.

Last fall Margaret appeared in a new opera workshop featuring the work of Richard Wargo. She sang the role of Trassie in scenes from his opera Sharon’s Grave at the Marcella Sembrich Opera Museum. She also toured with Seagle Music Colony’s post-season educational outreach opera as the soprano in Andrew Duncan's The Ugly Duckling. Over the summer she was a second time young artist at Seagle for their 100th anniversary season, performing the roles of Alice Ford in Falstaff, Snow White in Into the Woods, and Fantine in Les Misérables. Last summer she sang role of Elvira in Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri.

Newcomb resides in New York City, where she was recently seen as Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus with NY Opera Exchange, for which she was praised for being "OUTSTANDING, and the strongest singer on stage." She made her New York Opera Exchange debut in 2014 singing her third Pamina in Die Zauberflöte. In the summer of 2013 she sang the role of Poppea in L'incoronazione di Poppea at the Manhattan Summer Voice Festival. Before that she appeared in the first "NYC's Rising Stars" Concert at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center, and sang the title role of Handel’s Alcina and her first Pamina in Die Zauberflöte with New York Lyric Opera.

She has also performed many times abroad. During the summer of 2013, she sang the role of Contessa di Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Conservatorio S. Pietro a Majella in Naples, Italy. In the summers of 2011 and 2012 she was a young artist in Germany with Lyric Opera Studio Weimar under conductor Olaf Storbeck. She sang Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at both the Liebhabertheater schloß Kochberg and Sommertheater Weimar in Tiefurt, Germany. She also performed the role of Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni in Weimar. She appeared as a soloist in concert with the Thuringer Symphoniker at the Theater Rudolstadt, Großes Haus. In 2012 she was also a young artist in Newfoundland, Canada with Opera on the Avalon where she sang Conversa and Suor Osmina in Suor Angelica and covered Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi.

Margaret is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music masters program, where she was last seen as Alcina in the main stage production of Haydn's Orlando Paladino, conducted by Christian Capocaccia and directed by Robin Guarino. Before that, she appeared as Lillian Russell in Virgil Thomson's The Mother of Us All, conducted by Steven Osgood and directed by Dona D. Vaughn. During her undergraduate career at MSM, she sang the title role in the US premiere of Paisiello's Nina o sia la pazza per amore. She also had the privilege of studying roles with some of the best coaches, such as Anna in Kurt Weill's Die sieben Todsünden with Kenneth Merrill, Marguerite in Gounod's Faust with Thomas Muraco, and Adina in L'elisir d'amore with Martina Arroyo.

In addition to opera, Margaret is no stranger to musicals and straight theater. She has performed many roles in plays and musicals alike including Fantine and Cosette in Les Misérables, Nancy in Oliver, Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible, Annelle in Steel Magnolias, and Belle in Beauty and the Beast, for which she won the coveted "Freddy" Award at the Pennsylvania State Theater for "Best Actress in a Musical."
