About Margaret

PRESS/REVIEWS
"Closing the program was soprano Margaret Newcomb who pleases us every time she performs. She sang selections from Kurt Weill's The Seven Deadly Sins. She succeeded in bringing out the drama of the two Anna's by employing different voices. She did particularly well acting out the seductiveness of "Pride." [Voce di Meche]
"Margaret Newcomb was a marvelous Pamina. Newcomb used her full, warm voice well, whether singing lyrically and delicately or urgently and dramatically according to the needs of the opera's various plot turns." [Jack Quinn, Theaterscene.net]
"The sorceress Alcina has been transformed into an elegant and powerful player who solves all the problems. This is a perfect role for the stunning soprano Margaret Newcomb" [Voce di meche]
"Newcomb enchanted the audience with her sincere portrayal of the young heroine, skillfully navigating the music with her complex, sultry soprano. She mixed the playful youthfulness and seriousness of the role well, her performance of the famous "Ach, ich fühl's" especially beautiful." [OperaRox]
"Pamina, sung by the always excellent and beautiful Margaret Newcomb" [Voce di meche]

American soprano Margaret Newcomb has been praised for her warm vocal timbre, strong acting ability and statuesque stage presence. She was hailed "Appealing" and “a fine soprano” by the NY Times and "Excellent" by Opera News.

Ms. Newcomb is pleased to announce some upcoming engagements. This summer she will be a young artist at Seagle Music Colony where she will sing the role of Elvira in Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri. In the fall she will return to NY Opera Exchange to sing Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus.

Ms. Newcomb was most recently seen as Alcina in Manhattan School of Music's main stage production of Haydn's Orlando Paladino. Before that, she made her New York Opera Exchange debut singing her third Pamina in Die Zauberflöte. In the winter, she appeared as Lillian Russell in Virgil Thomson's The Mother of Us All  at Manhattan School of Music. Last summer, she sang the role of Contessa di Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Conservatorio S. Pietro a Majella in Naples, Italy and Poppea in L'incoronazione di Poppea at the Manhattan Summer Voice Festival. In the spring she appeared in the first "NYC's Rising Stars" Concert at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center.

In the past few years Ms. Newcomb has performed many times abroad. In the summers of 2011 and 2012 she was a young artist in Germany with Lyric Opera Studio Weimar under conductor Olaf Storbeck. She sang Pamina in Die Zauberflöte  at both the Liebhabertheater schloß Kochberg and Sommertheater Weimar in Tiefurt, Germany. She also performed the role of Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni in Weimar. She appeared as a soloist in concert with the Thüringer Symphoniker at the Theater Rudolstadt, Großes Haus. In 2012 she was also a young artist in Newfoundland, Canada with Opera on the Avalon where she sang Conversa and Suor Osmina in Suor Angelica  and covered Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi.

Margaret has performed numerous times in New York City including singing the title role of Handel’s Alcina and her first Pamina in Die Zauberflöte  with New York Lyric Opera. She also sang the title role in the US premiere of Paisiello's Nina o sia la pazza per amore during her undergraduate career at Manhattan School of Music.

Margaret has had the pleasure of studying roles with some of the best coaches, such as Anna in Kurt Weill's Die sieben Todsünden  with Kenneth Merrill, Marguerite in Gounod's Faust  with Thomas Muraco, and Adina in L'elisir d'amore  with Martina Arroyo.

In addition to opera, Ms. Newcomb is no stranger to musicals and straight theater. She has performed many roles in plays and musicals alike including Cosette in Les Misérables, Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible, Annelle in Steel Magnolias, and Belle in Beauty and the Beast, for which she won the coveted "Freddy" Award at the Pennsylvania State Theater for "Best Actress in a Musical."
