"Consider this production very successful, then, because I was crazy about the Violetta of Margaret Newcomb. Miss Newcomb is beautiful in face and figure, and has a very strong stage presence. Most importantly, she can sing this fiendishly difficult role and make it seem like it's easy. Her high notes seemed free, her coloratura unforced, her middle voice rich and beautiful. I hope I'll hear a lot from this singer in coming seasons."   Read more...

About Margaret

PRESS/REVIEWS
"Rosalinde (the flirty wife) is by far the character with the most stage time and the most challenging and extensive singing. Soprano Margaret Newcomb was outstanding and the strongest singer on stage, both in her solo arias and in the numerous duets, trios and other ensemble pieces. Her acting was on point too, with a snobbish and elegant flair representing Rosalinde as a two-faced yet charming woman one cannot entirely dislike. [Allegri con Fuoco]
"Closing the program was soprano Margaret Newcomb who pleases us every time she performs. She sang selections from Kurt Weill's The Seven Deadly Sins. She succeeded in bringing out the drama of the two Anna's by employing different voices. She did particularly well acting out the seductiveness of "Pride." [Voce di Meche]
"Margaret Newcomb was a marvelous Pamina. Newcomb used her full, warm voice well, whether singing lyrically and delicately or urgently and dramatically according to the needs of the opera's various plot turns." [Jack Quinn, Theaterscene.net]
"The sorceress Alcina has been transformed into an elegant and powerful player who solves all the problems. This is a perfect role for the stunning soprano Margaret Newcomb" [Voce di meche]
"Newcomb enchanted the audience with her sincere portrayal of the young heroine, skillfully navigating the music with her complex, sultry soprano. She mixed the playful youthfulness and seriousness of the role well, her performance of the famous "Ach, ich fühl's" especially beautiful." [OperaRox]
"Pamina, sung by the always excellent and beautiful Margaret Newcomb" [Voce di meche]

MARGARET NEWCOMB | SOPRANO

This summer Margaret will join the apprentice artists at Charlottesville opera, covering the role of Laurey in Oklahoma. This season, Margaret performed scenes from Gerald Cohen’s Steal a Pencil for Me, reprising the role of Ina Soep. She also appeared as a soloist in Bach’s B Minor Mass at the Dallas City Performance Hall and with the ‘Concerts in the Heights’ series in NYC.

Newcomb recently performed Lia in Debussy’s L’Enfant Prodigue with Bare Opera, Violetta in La Traviata with the Dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, the title role of Suor Angelica with the Opera Project DSM, and appeared as a featured soloist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Sonic Blossom, a performance art piece by Lee Mingwei. She also made her Fort Worth Opera debut singing Ina in scenes from Steal a Pencil for Me, and Diana 3 in Mikael Karlsson and Royce Vavrek’s Diana Vreeland.

For two summers, Margaret was a young artist at Seagle Music Colony, where she performed Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, Fantine in Les Misérables, and Elvira in Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri. During their post season Margaret sang the role of Trassie in a workshop of Richard Wargo’s Sharon’s Grave and toured with their educational outreach opera as the soprano role in Andrew Duncan’s The Ugly Duckling.

Other credits include Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus with NY Opera Exchange, Poppea in L'incoronazione di Poppea at the Manhattan Summer Voice Festival, the title role of Alcina with New York Lyric Opera, and Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Amalfi Coast Music Festival. As an apprentice of Lyric Opera Studio Weimar, she performed the roles of Pamina in Die Zauberflöte and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni at the Liebhabertheater schloß Kochberg and Sommertheater Tiefurt, and appeared as a soloist in concert with the Thuringer Symphoniker. In 2012 she was a young artist in Newfoundland, Canada with Opera on the Avalon where she sang Conversa and Suor Osmina in Suor Angelica and covered Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi.

Margaret earned both her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Manhattan School of Music, where she performed such roles as Alcina in Haydn's Orlando Paladino, Lillian Russell in Virgil Thomson's The Mother of Us All conducted by Steven Osgood, Nina in the US premiere of Paisiello's Nina o sia la pazza per amore, Anna in Kurt Weill's Die Sieben Todsünden, and covered Marguerite in Gounod's Faust.
